Supported CIM and Profile Versions¶

As a model-driven application, the Tool supports multiple versions of CIM and the derived profiles. A Profile is schema that defines the structure and semantics of a model that will be exchanged among parties. Each profile specifies a subset of the CIM classes and attributes specific to a business context or an application domain. For example, IEC 61970-452 describes CIM Static Transmission Network Model Profiles (also referred to as CPSM profile). The ENTSO-E profile group specifies a power system planning model exchanged among European Transmission System operators (TSOs). The ENTSO-E profile is in general compatible with CPSM profile. In summary, a CIM profile serves as a contract or agreement among parties that exchange the power system information.
Many functional modules in the Tool natively support multiple versions of CIM and the derived profiles. These are generic data-driven components. For example, users can load any versions of CIM/XML, standard or extended, for model exploratory analysis. The Tool will create various navigation trees and displays based on the data characteristics. Other data-driven modules include model comparison, model merging, incremental update etc. These functional modules are CIM-agnostic, thus working for any versions of CIM.
On the other hand, some of the functional modules in the Tool are CIM-aware. For example, validation must be guided by a model schema specification, so is the model partition function. The model schema specification, however, is not hard-coded in the Tool. Instead they are separated from software implementation and stored as a metadata file, i.e. XSD-based profile document. Basically, an XSD-based model schema specification is created for each version of profile. It includes all of the meta-knowledge about the specified model, including modeling restrictions and validation rules. In order to support a new version of CIM and the derived profiles, a set of new XSD profile documents must be created. For these CIM-aware application modules, the following CIM versions and the derived profiles are supported.
| CIM Version | Derived Profile Versions | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| CIM 17 | Network Code 2.4.0 | Network Code Profile (NCP) 2.4.0 was approved by ENTSO-E in September 2025. NCPs define additional datasets required to support power system operation in compliance with EU Network Code requirements (https://www.entsoe.eu/data/cim/cim-for-grid-models-exchange/). The NCP framework consists of 17 profiles, including Contingency, Availability (Outage), Remedial Action, Object Registry, and others. |
| CIM 17 | ENTSO-E CGMES 3.0 | Based on IEC FDIS 61970-600-1/2 |
| CIM 16 v28 | ENTSO-E CGMES 2.4 .15 | ENTSO-E CGMES 2.4.15 was approved by ENTSO-E. |
| CIM 16 | ENTSO-E CIM Profile Edition 2 (2012) CPSM_2012_CIM16 (draft) | ENTSO-E CIM Profile Edition 2 (2012) was tested in ENTSO-E CIM IOP 2012. No IOP tests have been conducted for CPSM_2012_CIM16 (draft). This draft profile is currently supported as an extension of ENTSO-E CIM profile (marked as ‘Operation’ in the ENTSOE-E profile). |
| CIM 15 | ENTSO-E CIM Profile Edition 2 (2011) CPSM_2011_CIM15 (draft) | ENTSO-E CIM Profile Edition 2 (2011) was tested in ENTSO-E CIM IOP 2011. No IOP tests have been conducted for CPSM_2011_CIM15 (draft). This draft profile is currently supported as an extension of ENTSO-E CIM profile (marked as ‘Operation’ in the ENTSOE-E profile). |
| CIM 14 | ENTSO-E CIM Profile Edition 1 CPSM 7 | ENTSO-E CIM Profile Edition 1 was tested in UCTE CIM IOP 2009. CPSM 7 was tested in EPRI CIM IOP 12, 2010. |
| CIM 13 | CPSM 6 | CPSM 6 was tested in EPRI CIM IOP 11, 2009. |
| CIM 12 | CPSM 4 | CPSM 4 was tested in EPRI CIM IOP 10, 2007. |
| CIM 11 | CPSM 3 | CPSM 3 was tested in EPRI CIM IOP 9, 2006. |
| CIM 10 | Final CPSM 2 | CPSM 2 was tested in EPRI CIM IOP 8, 2005. |
| CIM 10 | Preliminary CPSM 2 | Used during 2001 - 2005. |
Note: The Tool no longer supports ENTSO-E CIM profile tested during ENTSO-E IOP 2010. It is assumed that this profile is replaced by ENTSO-E CIM Profile Edition 2.
The Tool also supports CIM extension. Check Support of CIM Extension for more detail.
