Model Management¶

Model management is designed built to support the emerging industrial requirements of centralized information management in a utility organization. M3 is a standard based model maintenance & management tool designed to address the emerging information management requirements in the electric power industry. Built upon Common Information Model (CIM) and its related IEC standards, M3 provides a multidimensional modeling space and comprehensive data engineering functions to help electric utility organizations maintain and manage their power system models.
As a model engineering framework, M3 is designed to address common organizational and modeling issues and significantly reduce the overall engineering effort required to build a customer-specific modeling solution. The figure below summarizes this layered conceptual view, where a custom modeling solution is built on top of M3, which in turn is built on top of CIMSpy/CIMdesk.

The key common requirements that M3 is designed to address include:
- Centralized Modeling: Providing single-entry modeling solution for all of the downstream systems and applications.
- Time-based Modeling: Enabling users to model past, present, and future of the grid.
- Collaborative Modeling: Allowing Model Authorities to maintain their own portions of the power system model.
While M3 is a separate product, M3-Lite is a light-weight model management function deployed as part of the Tool. The primary function of M3-Lite is to support time-based modeling, enabling users to:
- Maintain as-built models in support of real-time operation;
- Derive ad-hoc study cases to support operational and long-term planning;
- Facilitate model change collection and maintenance of regional RTO/RC/TSO models.
It is strongly recommended that users read the related sections to understand the basic concepts of model management, and then follow the tutorial to get familiar with these concepts. The tutorial provides step-to-step instructions to walk you through the major workflow of the supported model managements, ranging from setting up model depository to model administration.
