Model Transformation¶

The feature of model transformation is designed to support model conversion between heterogeneous utility information models, including proprietary to CIM, CIM to CIM, and proprietary to proprietary.
Model transformation is a challenging task. The combination of the conversions that need to be supported makes it impractical to develop a one-size-fit-all solution. The objective is to provide end-users a Model Transformation Framework (MTF) from which they can derive their own maintainable and extensible model transformation solutions. MTF is designed to address the common model transformation issues and minimize the engineering effort needed to build a customizable model transformation solution meeting specific project requirements. By leveraging the common infrastructure support, users shall be able to build their own model transformation solution with minimal effort. To help users learn how to derive a MTF-based model transformation solution, three case studies were performed to show how MTF can be leveraged to address your business needs. The conducted case studies are included in the released package as a reference.
More specifically, the following use cases are supported:
- Model Conversion between Proprietary Information Models and CIM: This is the most common use case. The reason is simple: interoperability.
- CIM Version Conversion: CIM is a moving target and will continue to evolve. A utility organization may end up maintaining several versions of CIM, not interoperable with each other.
- Node/Breaker to Bus/Branch Conversion: Users want to produce a bus/branch base case for planning from their production operational systems, such as EMS, which typically model grids at a detailed node/breaker level.
- External Network Modeling: Utilities want to model their external networks by leveraging their neighbors’ or regional coordinators’ well-maintained production models.
This release is targeted at supporting the first three use cases. The external network modeling will be supported in the future release.
